CHOOSING A DANCE STUDIO

Picture
It seems dance studios in our area all have experienced and knowledgeable teachers to instruct children, and produce a dance recital at the end of the season.  Could we assume that all dance schools provide the same thing?

Is it essential to know what the differences are when you decide?

Absolutely!

Here you will read some bullet points, and questions you should ask before deciding on the right dance studio for you and your child, and as to the bigger differences with regard to the quality of our classes and instruction, as well as any added stresses that can amount for parents that impact the fun, enjoyment, excitement and fulfillment of being a part of a dance arts program.

  • Inquire about any enrichment programs?
At Dance Pointe it is not just about learning dance, theatre or music arts.  Students are introduced to a culture that is driven by commitment that spawns academic and social development.  Going above and beyond to be leaders and positive role models.  Directing individuals to make the right choices as they grown through our programs, and beyond into their college and adult lives.  We have a unique monthly leadership program that emphasizes goal-setting, discipline, commuity service and other principles.

  • Inquire as to what type of floor is used?

The physical elements of dance encompasses controlling movements, leaps and jumps that can impact muscles, bones and joints.  Shoes that are worn for class are typically soft to allow the dancer to freely move through their technique.  For dancers to get the optimal training without stress and fatigue on their muscles, bones and joints is to choose a dance studio equipped with a "floating" floor.  The floor is constructed of a wood material which rests on high-density foam blocks.  The floor is finished with a "marley" overlay which is the finish material that lays over the wood floor resting on foam.  It allows the dancer to keep their movements controlled while giving enough slide to optimize their training in class for the stage. Not many studios have these floors installed due to the cost involved.

Our studio is equipped with "floating" professional dance floors that reduces fatigue and promotes healthy muscle development. Students learn in a professional environment in private classrooms.  Window and Video monitoring is provided for all class viewings.

  • Ask, what the class size limits are?

Small class sizes are essential to your child's learning experience.  A personalized student/teacher interaction is important for students to learn the ideals and fundamentals dance.  The small class size hones in on each student to ensure that the proper technique is being used by each student as it is taught so as to not develop any unleveled habits that could be hard to adjust, and correct as your child develops.

Our studio limits class sizes to 6-10 per class maximizing student/teacher interaction with one teacher's assistance.

  • Look to see if there are any extra costs.

As all studios produce a season end recital, and therefore all students must have a costume to shine and perform in.  Some dance studios could ask you to sew or find a tailor to alter costumes.  This can cause added tasks for parents that already have enough to do!  many studios also charge for any extras that may find as a needed expense due to poor or lack of planning, and that expense can get passed on to you

Given the many benefits to pursuing a dance, theatre or music education at DPPAC, there is a cost that falls somewhere between soccer and ice-skating in terms of overall expense for an activity.  For a student interested in taking a single class at DPPAC, parents can expect to pay about $139 to $149 for our fundamentals program.  Approximately $100 for a year’s worth of dancewear and shoes, about $88 to $108 for a recital costume, and approximately $80 for recital tickets. Items such as photos and participation in the recital are optional and left to the family’s discretion. This cost does not vary significantly from the cost of other dance or performing arts studios.

Our recital performances are unique with professional painted backdrops, beautiful lighting effects, acting and live music.  Upon registration we make parents aware of what the costume and tight fees are so there are not surprises later.  Once our costumes are ordered, we hand out student's costumes during their class that are prepared in a garment bag for each student.  We take note of any alterations or exchanges that need to be done.  Personalized awards are presented to every student to commemorate their achievements throughout the year during a red carpet ceremony at our spring recital.

  • Customer Service - Is there administrative assistance for you?

Many studios will have a teacher or owner conducting class, and conducting administration.  This can take time away from the class, or you may be left with unanswered questions due to unavailable desk staff.  As a parent your experience is just as important as your child's experience.  You will want to know, or have questions about rehearsal schedules, photograph dates, costumes, makeup, etc.  Having these questions unanswered can pose as a frustrating experience rather than pleasing one.

Our staff is available during class times to provide assistance, and answer any questions that you may have efficiently due to proper planning and organization that we provide for our parents and students.

  • Is there convenient scheduling?

Many studios are limited to the programs that they can offer due to staff availability.

Our dance, theatre and music classes are offered at a variety of times so you can schedule classes for siblings, and friends at the same time saving parents hours of waiting and driving time.

Ask any studio in our area about our teaching technique, state of the art facility, teachers and staff, and you will hear why many families have enrolled in our programs more than any other schools in your area.   Call us today to see how you, and your child can embark on the fun, excitement and joy with the best dance, theatre and music learning experience here at Dance Pointe Performing Arts Center.
